Uniformly Fitting In – Amy Edition

By Amy

A few months back, we had a post featuring the fashionable duds that Will wears weekly at his school. Next up, we’ve got mine.

I have always loved wearing uniforms. Whether it was for marching band, cheerleading or that black and red D.A.R.E shirt in fifth grade, a uniform says you are part of a team. It says you belong. While some volunteers avoid wearing school uniforms, I welcome it. In a place where I stand out due to my height, skin color, and general foreignness, wearing the same thing as all the other teachers is one way I get to fit in every day. And I love seeing the look of confusion on someone’s face when they see this “bule” riding her bike home on a Saturday afternoon wearing the same scout uniform as every student and teacher in Indonesia.
